Life can get busy. And if you’re not careful, proper time management can fall by the wayside. You can end up spending your time on things and people that aren’t at the top of your list. Allocating your time to the right things can make you feel more fulfilled, less stressed and on top of the world!
Feeling like you have your shi* together is a great feeling, and when you’re juggling everything from your career to your health, relationships, hobbies, fitness and so on, it helps to feel like you’re in control of your life. Here are 7 of my best time management hacks to manage your time properly and live a more fulfilling life.
How to Manage Your Time Wisely
1. Invest in a Planner and Get Planning
How can you expect to manage your time properly without taking the time to plan out your life? From work deadlines to fitness classes, girls’ nights out and date nights, it’s important to have your schedule laid out in one place. Invest in a pretty planner you’ll love opening up each day- I love paper planners, but if you find an online planner that works well for you, that’s great too!
Create a daily schedule each morning so you know exactly what’s on your to-do list. I write down everything from specific people I need to email to who I’m meeting for dinner that night, and everything else in between. Getting specific in your planner will definitely help you manage your time!
2. Prioritize Tasks and Give Each One a Time Frame
Now that you have your schedule laid out, it’s time to set boundaries for how long you have to complete each task on your to do list. Without a set time frame, it’s easy to get off track with distractions or give too much time to one task that’s not as important as others.
First, prioritize each task on your list from most urgent/important to least, and then give yourself a certain amount of time to get each task done. Give your full attention to each of the tasks for the allotted time and you’ll see how much more you accomplish!
3. Wake Up Earlier
Last week I an appointment and couldn’t eat for eight hours before I went in. Since I didn’t want to go the whole day without food, I got up about one and a half hours earlier than I usually do to get some food in my belly! That morning, I got SO much work done and checked tasks off my list before I would usually even be awake. If you have a lot on your to do list, waking up early can help you get them done!
4. Use Waiting to Your Advantage
Waiting can be such a waste of time, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. I’ve waited an hour for doctor’s appointments before, and I’m sure there was a good reason, but it doesn’t make up for the fact that an hour of my time was thrown down the drain!
Instead of twiddling your thumbs in the waiting room, use your time wisely. Respond to emails, create social media posts, read up on recipes to make for dinner, or plan your best friend’s birthday party that you’re in charge of. There’s always something productive you can be doing while you wait, so make sure you make the best of your time!
5. Work on Weekends (Just a Little)
I can’t remember the last weekend where I didn’t do at least some form of work. Some of you may think that’s crazy, but I actually really don’t mind it and it allows me to focus on other things during the week. If I have a lot of work to get done, instead of working late into Tuesday or Wednesday night, I let myself go to a yoga class or get drinks with friends and do some work on Saturday or Sunday.
Unless I have plans or am traveling on the weekend, I find doing a few hours of work really helps me stay on top of things and allows me to have more time for doing the things I love during the week! You still have tons of time to see friends and do your favourite activities and you feel productive!
6. Figure Out What (And Who) Deserves Your Time
This may be the most important tip of them all. Don’t waste your time on excess- on things that aren’t important and people who don’t make you feel like the best version of yourself. Give your time to your family, your best friends, your significant other. Do activities that make you feel happy, strong and healthy and don’t prioritize things that suck the life out of you.
Spend time on things that make you a better, more fulfilled person- make time for self care and self love; see and talk to your family on a regular basis; make time for date nights and girls’ nights out. Your work is important, but don’t get so work-obsessed that you neglect the people and activities that light you up inside. Always give your time to these things and people.
7. Say No When You Want To Say No
People and women specifically, are intrinsically are people pleasers. We don’t like saying no and in turn, we end up filling our calendars with activities we don’t necessarily really want to do. Did you get invited to an event where you know there will be a lot of people you’re not fond of? Say no. Were you asked to speak at an event on a weeknight of a week where you already have plans every other night and know it will exhaust you? Say no.
Say no when you’re overbooked and overworked. Commit only to things that make you happy and bring you joy. There will always be more opportunities and the right ones will always work out. Prioritize what’s important to you and say no to anything else!
Time management is easy when you prioritize what’s important to you and have a system for getting things done! DO you have any other time management tips you’d add to the list?
