10 Daily Habits to Boost Your Mood Significantly

10 Daily Habits to Boost Your Mood

Creating daily habits to boost your mood is one of the best ways to enhance creativity, increase productivity and feel happier as you go about your day! Creating habits takes work at first, but after experimenting with them for a while to find what works for you, they become second nature.

Some will stick and some won’t, but I wanted to share some habits that have worked to make me feel happier on a daily basis! These are 10 little things you can do everyday that are sure to boost your mood!

1. Make Your Bed

You may not think something as small as making your bed can make a difference in your mood, but it can actually set the tone for you entire day. Making your bed every morning is so important and there have been plenty of studies to prove it!

Small details like making your bed help you feel like your life is put together, and urge you to do more organizational tasks like clearing clutter out of your room. Make it a habit and you won’t even have to think about it day after day.

2. Embrace Hygge

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-ga”)  is a Danish word that encompasses feelings of coziness and wellbeing through enjoying the simple things in life. Embracing a hygge lifestyle can make you feel happier and more content.

Light candles in your apartment, layer your couch with throw blankets and pillows, spend a Sunday afternoon reading a good book with a cup of tea, order in and watch Neflix with a group of friends in your sweatpants. The simple things in life are sure to make you feel good, so make sure to embrace hygge as much as possible. And no, laying in your bed on your phone does NOT count as hygge.

3. Eat a Nutritious Breakfast

What you put in your body can really affect your mind and mood. A proper breakfast gives your body the nutrition and fuel it needs to get started on the right foot and rule the day!

Make sure your breakfast is healthy and keeps you satisfied so you don’t get distracted by hunger pains and start feeling weak. A good breakfast ensures you’re energized and boosts your mood!

4. Let the Light In

Daylight can significantly lift your mood. Even if the sun isn’t shining, it’s still helpful to open up your blinds in the morning to let in as much light as possible.

And if you work from home like me, this is even more important. Working away in the dark can make you much less productive, so do yourself a favour and let as much daylight in as possible!

5. Write Everyday

Writing is good for your soul!!! And no, I don’t mean writing a book or a blog post (unless you’re into that), I mean writing down your thoughts, goals, aspirations or gratitude list. Writing can help you clear your mind, focus the good things in your life, and make you feel better overall.

I make sure to write down at least ten things I’m grateful for everyday and also love to write down my schedule and goals. There’s something about putting pen to paper that is so darn satisfying!

6. Morning Affirmations

Saying affirmations in the morning can also put a positive spin on your day. Affirmations can boost your mood, confidence and make you happier. They help you get to where you want to go and remind you that you can do whatever you set your mind to. Affirmations help bring on all the positive energy so you can go through your day with lots of good vibes!

7. Move Your Body

I don’t workout or go to the gym everyday, but the days I do, I always feel so much better all around. I feel great physically and mentally, and always feel happier and more productive.

On days I can’t get to the gym, I try to make sure to at least do an at-home yoga session (Yoga with Adriene is my go-to!), or any at-home workout that gets my heart beating and blood flowing! Even 10 to 15 minutes can make a huge difference in boosting your mood!

8. Do More of The Things You Truly Enjoy

It’s easy to get caught up doing things you think you should be doing rather than things you actually enjoy doing. Just because all your friends love going to spin classes doesn’t mean you have to, and just because your sister thinks it’s a waste of money to get a manicure doesn’t mean you have to listen to her advice.

Think about the things you truly enjoy. This could be anything from cooking to cafe-hopping to going to yoga with friends to going on walks on your own to spending your Monday nights watching the Bachelor/Bachelorette.

Everyone has guilty pleasures, everyone has passions, hobbies and indulgences and you shouldn’t ever feel the need to apologize for them. Sure, if you’re missing work to waste the day away, or spending hours every night watching TV instead of working on your new side hustle, then that may be a problem, but generally speaking, allow yourself to do more of the things you love the most.

9. Put Your Phone Away

I can’t stress this one enough, and it’s one that I probably have to work on the most. I can make the excuse that a big part of my work requires me to be on my phone, but I know that most of my phone time is wasted mindlessly scrolling Instagram and watching videos on Facebook.

Let’s all do ourselves a favour and put our phones away. Spending time on social media can lead to the comparison game and inevitably feeling less than. Screens also strain our eyes and can even impair cognitive function.

Set a time each night to put your phone away, don’t pull your phone out if you’re spending time with other people and cut yourself off from phone time during the day. I know it’s easier said than done, but if you consciously make an effort to decrease the time you spend on your phone, the more likely it is to happen.

10. Get Outside

As someone who works from home, I can go a full day (or two…sometimes even three) without leaving the house. The fridge is stocked, we have a gym in our condo and I work from the kitchen island, so it’s easy to stay inside, especially when it’s cold out.

However, I always feel so much better getting into the fresh air, even when it’s cold out! Getting outside can improve your mental health, boost your immune system, and elevate your mood. You’ll get more vitamin D, get more exercise, and feel more relaxed and concentrated for the rest of the day.

If you work from home, make it a habit to go grab a coffee in the morning, go to the grocery store, meet a friend on your lunch break, go for an afternoon walk…anything to get you out of the house!

These 10 habits are sure to life your spirits and boost your mood on the daily! Do you have any habits you’ve created that have helped you boost your mood? I’d love to hear them!
