When you think of self care, what comes to mind? Lately self care has been attached to activities like getting your nails done, indulging in your favourite sweet, and retail therapy – basically, treating yourself. And while treating yourself is definitely important to do, self care encompasses a lot more than a eucalyptus bubble bath. “Boring” self care activities are the somewhat mundane things you do that aren’t exciting, but make you feel better and more productive as you head into your week.

I’m writing this blog post on a Sunday, and I’m taking the day as a “boring” self care day. I woke up and went to the gym, did a big grocery shop, came home and showered, put on the laundry and loaded up the dishwasher. I plan to vacuum, take out the garbage/recycling, clean the bathroom and make a healthy dinner. This may sound like a boring day, but as I sit here writing, I feel so good that that I’m going to have a clean apartment, a stocked fridge, and clean clothes and sheets for the week ahead.

Boring self care takes little stresses out of your week. It may seem small, but think of starting Monday off with dishes in the sink or a full laundry basket and wondering what you’re going to wear because you didn’t get around to doing laundry. Life happens and I realize we can’t always have a full day on Sunday to do all these things, but if you can get them done in little bits over the weekend, you’ll feel amazing come Monday morning!

Here are 7 acts of “boring” self care for a better, more productive week!

1. Grocery Shop

Sometimes life gets so busy that grocery shopping takes last place. I hate being home with an empty fridge and cupboards and having to grab something out for most of my meals. Whether you work at home (like me!) or not, it’s important to stock up for the week ahead. This allows you to make healthy meals for yourself so you don’t have to eat out or order in all the time. You can also use Sunday as a meal prep day for the week if that helps you stay organized! Planning out your meals also helps. If you can think ahead for what types of meals you want to make each day and plan for meals with common ingredients, your grocery shop will be a success!

2. Do Your Laundry (Clothes and Sheets)

I’m one of those strange people who actually enjoys doing laundry! I think I more so love the feeling of knowing I have clean clothes and sheets. Seriously, is there anything better than jumping into a bed with clean sheets and bedding!? Doing your laundry ensures you have clean clothes for the week ahead and aren’t stressed out in the mornings. And if you workout during the week, you’ll want to make sure you have clean workout clothes. There’s nothing worse than planning to go to the gym and realizing all your gym clothes are in the laundry bin!

3. Clean Your Dishes

Another thing you want to avoid is waking up Monday morning to pour yourself a bowl of cereal and realizing there are no clean bowls because you didn’t turn on the dishwasher. Load, run and unload your dishwasher so you go into your week knowing your dishes are ready to be served on! And if you have any un-cleaned dishes in your sink, make sure you get to those too!

4. Declutter and Clean Your Home

One of the things that makes me feel so great as I head into the work week is waking up to a clean apartment! Especially an uncluttered apartment, where the garbage and recycling is taken out, the floors are vacuumed, the bathrooms clean and there’s no unnecessary papers and clutter laying around.

5. Drink Lots of Water and Minimize (or Eliminate) Caffeine

Water is so incredibly important for your wellbeing. Many of us don’t get nearly as much water as we should, but it’s crucial for our self care. We need to keep our bodies hydrated so they function properly and feel energized. Minimizing caffeine also helps with things like stress and anxiety. You may think you need your morning cup of joe, but drinking a large glass of water helps wake you up without the crash.

6. Take Your Vitamins, Eat Healthy and Exercise

These three go for every day of the week. If you want to feel your best, filling yourself with nutritious foods and vitamins and getting your exercise in are things you should be doing as much as you can.

7. Take Care of You

Shower, cut your nails, do a face mask, shave your legs…do anything you need to do to make yourself feel good and at your best as you head into the week! Need a new deodorant? Go buy one. About to get your period and you know you’re out of your go-to feminine hygiene product? Time to stock up. Plan on wearing a dress with tank top sleeves tomorrow? Shave your armpits.

Doing all these little “boring” things may not sound like the ideal way to spend your weekend, but I’m ending off my Sunday feeling amazing and 100% set for a great, productive week!

  1. I too have noticed how self-care is now including “treats” which we pay for like having nails done by someone else. But, like you, I truly believe that it’s the foundation-of-our-daily-lives-things which are the real self care. Lovely post.
