Happy Tuesday!! I wanted to talk about a topic that’s been on everyone’s mind lately: How to beat the Instagram algorithm! If you’ve been trying to grow your Instagram account (say hi to me here!), you’ve probably noticed that it’s becoming harder and harder to gain new followers and increase your engagement. It seems like just when I think I’ve got the hang of the new algorithm, it changes again! Anyone else with me?
I truly think that Instagram has our best interests in mind with all the algorithm changes they make. Their goal is to get rid of bot accounts and accounts that have bought followers. If you are REAL on Instagram and don’t do anything sketchy to grow your following, then you can succeed with the new algorithm. You simply need a strategy and must to be willing to put in the work.
The best thing to do is to keep creating great content and connect with your audience. Never stop feeding your community. The accounts that are able to grow on Instagram are the ones who engage organically and foster their community. We’re all so worried about getting new followers, but from now on I urge you to create content with the goal of pleasing the followers you already have. Create for the people who already love you and you’re sure to attract more along the way!
The Deal with the New Instagram Algorithm
The way the new Instagram algorithm works is that when you post a photo, only 10% of your audience sees it. 10%!!! The more engagement your photo gets, the more it will be shown to the rest of your followers. The more engagement it gets, the more likely it is to show up on the Explore Page or Top Posts page, expanding your reach!
If you think the new algorithm is frustrating, I totally feel you, but I have learned some tips to help you succeed on the platform. Here are 6 tips to beat the Instagram algorithm!
1) Go Wild with Instagram Stories
Instagram Stories have become one of my favourite features. They’re so much fun and they’re a great way to connect with your audience. You can also reach a bigger audience if you use the tools to your advantage. Just like Instagram posts, Instagram Stories come up in search results when you use hashtags and locations. Always make sure to tag your location and use hashtags in your Stories for a better chance to show up on the Explore Page!
2) Consistency is Key
Consistency has become the name of the game on Instagram. If you’re not showing up to the platform on a daily basis, it’s going to be extremely hard for you to grow. Try to post at least once a day and do that consistently. If you’re an account that posts multiple times a day, then keep it up! I find that whenever I post consistently I’m always able to continuously grow my following, where as if I don’t post for a couple of days, the numbers will drop off. As long as you find what works for you and consistently create content around that schedule, you can be successful with the algorithm!
3) Use Relevant Hashtags
Hashtags are really important to grow your account. But not just any old hashtags. You want to make sure you’re using hashtags that are relevant to your photo. The more relevant they are, the better. It’s beneficial to do hashtag research so you’re not going into every post wondering what hashtags to use. The hashtags you use will really depend on your personal account, but there are certain ways to find hashtags that are easy for everyone!
When you’re creating your caption and start typing in a hashtag, a list of hashtags using that word will appear, with the number of times that specific hashtag has been used. This is a great way to find hashtags related to your photo. You can also use Instagram’s hashtag search feature to look up related hashtags! Another strategy you can use is to look at accounts that post similar content to you and see what hashtags they’re using that make sense for your photos. Hashtag research can take time, but it’s definitely worth it!
4) Create Captions to Boost Engagement
It’s more important than ever to create engaging captions. Tell your story, let your audience into your life, and ask them questions. People are more likely to comment if they can relate to the story you’re telling or if you ask them a question they can’t wait to answer. The more engagement on the photo, the more likely you’ll show up in front of more people, so engagement is QUEEN!
5) Include a Call to Action
A call-to-action is another great way to create higher engagement on your posts and help get your photos onto the explore page! Plus, they’re really fun for your followers. For example, maybe you post a photo of a yummy iced latte and ask your followers to tag a friend they’d love to be sharing one with right now. Or let’s say you’re going on a vacation to Australia, you could say something like “Tag a fiend you’d love to be on a beach with right now”. You get the jist!
6) Engage with Others and Speed Up Your Engagement
If you want engagement (likes and comments) on your account, you can’t sit around and wait for it. You have to get out there and engage with others! This is one of the best ways to beat the Instagram algorithm and grow your account. The best time to engage is right after you post a photo.
One of the biggest mistakes some people make is post their photo and then go off and do something else. Engage immediately! Instagram favours photos with quick engagement, meaning the more engagement you have when you post, the more it will show up in your followers’ feeds. Another tip? Try to respond to any comments within an hour of getting them on your photo. This will help you beat the algorithm too.
