Online entrepreneurship is growing every single year. From bloggers and influencers, to web designers, freelance writers, virtual assistants (and so much more), our generation is kicking office culture to the curb. Almost everything can be done virtually these days and people keep finding new ways to make money online. More people are realizing that when you could work on building your own dreams, it makes little sense to work on someone else’s.
The online world and social media has created so many opportunities for us to create our own empires. When people asked me what I wanted to be when I was younger, “a blogger” wasn’t even a thing yet. It wasn’t actually until last year that I decided I wanted to take my blog from passion to hustle. Along with monetizing my blog I’m also a freelance writer and run an e-commerce business where I help people save and make money when they shop online…pretty rad, right?
It IS pretty rad, but there’s a lot of misconceptions people have about entrepreneurs. For example, we hang out at coffee shops doing anything but work, we sleep in until noon, or we do pilates and drink green juice all day and check our emails from time to time. The truth is, when you work for yourself, the work never really stops. I RARELY take an entire weekend off and some nights I’ll work til midnight, but I never have to ask to take a vacation, I make my own hours (I CAN catch up with a friend for coffee or take a yoga class mid-afternoon, but I tack on hours at night), and most importantly, I’m working on projects I LOVE and building my own empire. For me, there’s nothing better than that.
Over the past couple years living the entrepreneurial life, I’ve learned to learn from those who are where I want to be, confide in mentors, and ask as many questions as possible to successful business owners. Here’s some things I’ve learned about the habits of successful online entrepreneurs.
1. They Wake Up Early
Entrepreneurs know there’s no time to waste. Time is money and until you’ve built a residual income, you’re losing money while you sleep. When you work for yourself, you have the “luxury” of sleeping in if you want to (I mean, no one’s going to scold you like they would at an office), but most online entrepreneurs wake up with a long to-do list, and they know sleeping in can’t be part of the job.
One of my professors in University told us he only slept a few hours a night. He couldn’t understand how people sleep so much when you can do so much more when you’re awake. Although I’m a huge advocate for getting a proper 7 to 8-hour sleep, I definitely understood where he was coming from. If I sleep in I feel like so much of my day has been wasted, and I find I’m most productive in the mornings!
2. They Have an Offline Tribe
The online world can be a lonely place, and when it’s just you and your laptop all day long, you can start to go a little stir crazy. When I jumped into online entrepreneurship, I couldn’t be happier. I loved working for myself and not having to go into an office every day to build someone else’s dream, but I also felt like something was missing. Luckily, a few months later I was introduced to a team of entrepreneurs who have helped me take my business to the next level.
Having people you can throw ideas around with, get inspiration from, and relate to on a creative level is so incredibly priceless. Even if the bulk of your work is done online, make sure you’re collaborating offline as well. It will keep you balanced and sane.
3. They Read Books
Successful online entrepreneurs, actually, successful people in general, read A LOT of books. Reading gives you knowledge and inspiration, and can push you to think about life with a new perspective. Even if you don’t agree with what’s said in a book, it can challenge your opinion in new ways. Reading something you disagree with actually influences your ability to think creatively.
The insight you get from constantly reading books helps you face challenges and see different sides of the same story. It keeps your wheels turning and makes it easier for you to relate and contribute to conversations. Try to read at least 20 to 30 minutes a day. My favourite time to read is right before bed!
4. They Have Goals and a Killer Mindset
The most uninspiring thing is talking to people without any goals. They’re going through life with little direction and no motivation for doing more. Of course, you don’t have to be an entrepreneur to have big goals, but you can’t be a successful entrepreneur without them. Goals ensure you’re always reaching higher and are never comfortable with where you’re at. They give you focus, allow you to measure your progress, and motivate you to get things done!
Having goals has a lot to do with mindset. Having a strong mindset means you believe you’re in control of your own ability, and can improve and grow. Constant growth and bettering oneself is what creates success.
5. They Listen to Podcasts
Podcasts are HUDE these days, and for good reason. When you find a podcast you love, it’s like everything they’re saying to you is music to your ears. There are so many inspirational entrepreneurial podcasts, but some of the top ones are Being Boss, The Strategy Hour, The GaryVee Audio Experience, and Elyse Gets Crafty. Listening to podcasts motivates you, pumps you up, and makes you realize that other people have been in your shoes. Successful people aren’t born successful, they became successful with a lot of hard work, determination and consistency, and these podcasts highlight that.
You don’t just hear about the highs, you also hear about all the challenges and lows that come with owning your own business and how you can turn them around and thrive. Instead of listening to music on your commute, throw a podcast on and learn how to take your business to the next level.
6. They’re Consistently Consistent
To be successful you don’t have to be the smartest, or be the best at something, you just have to be consistent. There are many things successful people do that are easy to do that are also very easy not to do. Listen to one podcast a day: easy to do, easy not to do. Read 20 to 30 minutes a day: easy to do, easy not to do. This idea comes from a book my friend was telling me about called ‘The Slight Edge’, it’s next on my must-read list!
A lot of the time, we look at peoples’ success, but we never see the struggle. Success stories aren’t born overnight, they’re made by individuals consistently working on their craft until one day they eventually hit it big.
Did you know that about 90% of blogs fail? When you look at the numbers, becoming a blogger doesn’t seem very promising. But you know what? The bloggers who make it aren’t the best bloggers or the smartest bloggers, they’re the consistent bloggers who kept going when their readership and followers were low and no one wanted to work with them. They consistently posted and engaged with others when no one but their mom was reading their blog. They didn’t give up, and so they didn’t fall into the 90%, they’re in the 10%. For some it took a couple years, for some it took ten years. If you’re consistent, you CAN and WILL make it happen.
