I remember when my sister first introduced me to Instagram. We used it to find pretty photos we could use for the backdrops of our phones. Fast forward to a few years later and it has evolved into a creative platform I use on the daily to connect with like-minded people and share snippets of my everyday life. A question I get asked a lot is how to grow your Instagram followers, so I’ve rounded up some of my best tips!

There are definitely strategies behind successful Instagram accounts. It’s very rare that someone will just start an account and rack up thousands of followers…unless they buy them- PLEASE don’t do this. It doesn’t help anyone, and it’s pretty sleazy. There are honest ways to grow your account and you’ll feel so proud when you see your following grow and know you did it yourself!

Instagram has become a must for lifestyle bloggers. Sure, you can get by without it, but it’s a way to compliment your blog and get more personal with your readers. It’s also a way for a bigger audience to find you. It’s more difficult to randomly stumble upon a blog on the internet than an Instagram feed. And if you use the strategies below, you’ll have an even greater chance of being found!

I owe Instagram a lot. It’s kind of weird to say, but it’s true. Did you guys know I met my business partner/one of my best friends on Instagram? I’m not lying when I say it’s a great way to connect with like-minded people and grow your community. You never know what types of opportunities are waiting for you in the world of Instagram – collaborating with other bloggers, brands, selling products or services, and even making an income through the platform!

Sound like your cup of tea?

Check out 6 ways to grow your Instagram followers this year!

1. CREATE AN ATTENTION-GRABBING BIO

Your bio is the first thing anyone sees when they stumble upon your account. For those who find you on the platform (rather than through your blog or another social platform), you want to make sure you’re giving off an excellent first impression. You only get a few seconds to hook them, so make sure your bio is up to snuff!

How do you do that? Tell them what you do, what type of content you create, and let your personality shine. You can use things such as emojis, humor, and attention-grabbing blurbs to get your target followers hooked on your content!

Make sure to also include a call-to-action, like telling them to read your latest blog post, or check out your event planning website so they can get to know you further. They’ll be much more likely to follow along!

2. THEME YOUR FEED

Creating a theme is a great way to ensure a visually appealing, attractive feed. I wrote an entire post here about how to theme your Instagram, but my main tips are to get inspiration from accounts you admire, be consistent with your color scheme, be thoughtful about your purpose and position yourself as an expert.

In other words, why are people coming to your account? For fashion inspiration? To find out the best places to eat in your city? To get business advice? Figure out what it is you want your account to be known for and create a theme around that.

3. TAKE PRETTY PHOTOS

No one wants to follow an account with blurry, out-of-focus photos. If you look at accounts with a high following, you’ll notice that their photos are clean, crisp, bright and overall gorgeous. Or they’re a jokes meme account, but we can’t all be that clever.

Humans are naturally attracted to pretty aesthetics, whether it’s photos of world travels, coffee shops, beauty products or stylish outfits. There’s something about pretty photos that attracts people and makes them want to follow our personal journey.

You don’t have to be a professional photographer to take good photos and you don’t have to have a DSLR camera either, so stop it with those excuses! I use my iPhone to take most of my Instagram photos, and with the help of editing apps like PicTapGo and VscoCam, you can create a beautiful aesthetic.

4. ENGAGE

Engagement is key if you want to grow your Instagram followers. As soon as I starting engaging with other Instagrammers, my likes, comments and followers grew substantially. It’s one thing to have great photos, it’s another to actually use Instagram as what it was made to be – a social platform.

By engaging with others who share a similar focus as you, you are sure to increase your engagement and grow your community with like-minded people. How do you find people to engage with? Easy…Use hashtags!

Are you a food and fashion blogger? You can search hashtags such as #foodblogger #fashionblogger #foodandfashion #styleblog #foodblog etc. to find users to engage with. You can also look at users who comment on those photos to find even more people to engage with. The opportunities are endless!

5. USE INSTAGRAM STORIES

I love, love, love that the platform introduced Instagram stories and I think it was genius on their part! So many bloggers and influencers use Snapchat, but now they can share short videos right from Instagram. I was never huge on Snapchat, but I’m pretty active on Instagram stories! You can follow me here!

Instagram stories allow you to share snippets of your everyday life while it’s happening. It’s a great way to let your followers get to know you on a more personal level and build connections in a new way. You can share stories about places you eat, what your work space looks like, a photography set up, a new blog post, pretty much anything!

6. HASHTAGS ARE GOLD

Hashtags are gold on Instagram. How else are people supposed to find your photos? Remember how I said above that the best way to engage is to search hashtags. Well that’s how others are finding people to engage with and follow too. So as you can see, using hashtags is key to getting your name out there.

  4. Love your tips! Very helpful as always. I have also discovered that using Instagra pods is a great way to connect. What are your thoughts on it? and How do people find them?

    1. Hi Tanya, thanks so much! Yes! I think Instagrampods can be really great for growing your community, engagement, and connecting with other bloggers! I am part of a number of blogger Facebook groups, and often people ask if anyone wants to join a pod! Otherwise, I’m not too sure! Hope that helps 🙂
