Having a proper morning routine can set the tone for your entire day. There are certain things you can do in the morning that will make you feel energized, inspired, and ready to take on your day full-force. It’s important to ensure that your mind and body are ready for whatever comes your way,  and you can fuel yourself by doing (and not doing) certain things.

It’s also essential to maintain your routine. Waking up at the same time throughout the week will ensure you don’t get too tired during the day and will train your body to get up and moving at your ideal time.

Over the past year, I’ve had quite a few changes for my blog and business. I was introduced to an amazing entrepreneurial opportunity and launched a media company (Lipstick and Muffin Media) with my fellow girl boss, Tracey! This was one of the best decisions/steps I’ve ever made for my business and my life (cheesy, but true!). I’ve been introduced to so many amazing people and have expanded my services and entrepreneurial reach, working alongside an incredible team.

This has meant that I have more meetings, I am networking more, and working with people rather than on my own. I think a lot of us love the thought of working for ourselves, but one thing I’ve learned over the past year is that it can definitely get lonely. So when I had the opportunity to work with like minded entrepreneurs in more of a team environment, I jumped on the chance!

Now, on top of freelance writing and blogging, my days consist of everything from event planning, to coffee shop meetings to work on client projects, to fashion/beauty events, to business/blog consultations, to Instagramming, and everything in between! We also have a secret project in the works, but more on that later if everything goes as planned!

My morning routine isn’t perfect, there are still things I’d like to tweak. I’m in the process of waking up earlier than 8:30. But the truth is, I don’t feel fully rested when I wake up any earlier and I figure that as long as I start working between 9 and 9:30 I can still get an entire eight to nine-hour work day in.

Some tips that I’ve come to realize and live by: A nutritious breakfast is key. Load up on protein, whole grains, and fruit to keep you full and productive throughout your morning. I’ve also started taking a multivitamin and can’t even begin to explain the difference I’ve felt overall! I love the one from Isotonix because it’s in powder form and you stir it into a liquid, which means your body absorbs it right away, and at a much higher percentage than a pill form.

Another tip is to not check your emails right when you wake up – it can be distracting and stressful. And always try to get in some time for reading. Reading provides you with a wealth of knowledge, spurs creativity, and if you’re a writer/blogger like me, it will only benefit your biz.

Am I the only one who loves looking at peoples’ morning routines/schedules? I figured if I do, then some of you might too, so this is what my morning routine looks like right now!

8:00 – 8:30 Wake up call

If I wake up any earlier than 8:30 I usually just hit snooze, lounge in bed and check emails and Instagram, which I want to stop. I don’t want to do anything work-related until I sit down at my desk and start my day, even though it can be so tempting.

I think this is important for many reasons. First of all, if you check your emails right away you’re tempted to start working before you even get out of bed. This can lead to unnecessary stress. Secondly, it distracts you and leads you off track of your positive morning routine. Thirdly, in the long run it builds expectation from others that you will be available at that time. You don’t need to respond to everything right away.

8:30 Roll out of bed and wash up

I usually shower at night because I work out at night, so this saves me some time in the morning. I get dressed and usually put on make up, even if I’m working from home. It makes me feel more productive when I get fully ready as if I were going into an office. If I am working from home I wear something more casual and cozy than if I have a meeting.

9:00 Make breakfast and read

This is my favourite part of my morning! I like to fuel up with a good breakfast – usually yogurt with fruit and granola, a banana/toast with organic peanut butter, or oatmeal with fruit – and of course some black tea for a pick-me-up! Nope, I’m not a coffee person.

And I like to fuel my brain by reading. I read a magazine, book, or sometimes online news pieces, although I prefer to read anything paperback since I stare at a computer screen all day.

Ideally I would have an hour to eat breakfast and read, so that’s the main reason I want to start my day at 8.

9:30 Social media, emails, and plan

Social media is a big part of my job. Promoting yourself and connecting with others is key as a blogger/ entrepreneur, so I like to start my day by getting all my social media in order. Some days I’m better with it than others, but I aim to do at least one Instagram post (and engage with other ‘grammers), schedule Tweets to go out throughout the day, and do some pinning!

I also check emails at this time and see if there’s anything urgent I need to tend to.

Then I look over my to-do list. I like to end off each day by making a list for the next day, so I go through the list and see if there’s anything I need to add to it or change up, depending on deadlines or even my mood.

10:00-10:30 Respond to emails and start my to-do list  

Once I feel like everything is in order, I respond to any urgent emails and then get to work with my to-do list. As I mentioned above, every day is different, so this could mean writing a piece for one of the publications I contribute to, preparing an article for my blog, working through a course, setting up appointments, working on client projects, or getting together with my business partner to talk shop!

This basically takes me through the remainder of the day – working on all my different projects and taking lots of meetings! Right now, I wouldn’t change a thing!

  1. It’s so interesting to see what helps different people’s productivity…I start my day at 5:30…if I lay in bed much later than that, I end up letting the important stuff slide. Plus, my kids are awake at 6 or 6:30, and I really need a head start 🙂 Pinning for others to enjoy!

  2. Great morning routine! I start my day a little late… I don’t even want to mention the time! lol I am a nightowl and often feel motivated/inspired late at night, which results in me sleeping in late. However, a lot of the things you mentioned I have been incorporating into my morning routine and even posted a blog about it a few weeks ago as well. I start my work on social media and/or email reading too, as it helps me get into the right mindset without feeling drained right away!

  3. I’m currently working on revamping my morning routine for 2017. Currently, I wake between 430-500am. I make coffee, and then spend 30 minutes meditating/thinking grateful thoughts. Then, I will look at my tomorrow list that I made the night before, and plan my day. Next, I will read a few blog articles and schedule my social media posts for the day using Hootsuite. Finally, I come out to the living room and send my wife off to school (she’s a teacher) by 6:30. 4:30 seems crazy early, but all 3 of my kids are up by 6. I have to schedule my “me” time before they get up.

  5. I am definitely in need of a proper morning routine. I mean, I kind of have one, for times where I have to get up, but I hate it and I hate to get up. Maybe if I had a cool morning routine I would love to get up early more? Haha. Anyways, the striped notebook on the picture, I have the same one and I think it’s so cute! 🙂
