Many people dream about working for themselves, and I’ve been lucky enough to be steadily growing my own online business over the past year. I’m not exactly where I want to be, but the exciting part is that it’s always changing and growing into something new. And I wanted to share my best tips on how to be a girl boss in 7 simple steps!
I began my entrepreneurial endeavor with freelance writing, which I absolutely love! Contributing to other blogs and websites has been such an amazing experience and I continue to jump into exciting new projects. My blog has also been growing at a quick pace over the past few months. I’ve began to treat my blog like a business and I’m so excited that it has actually started bringing in some income!
What I’m most excited about is my most recent business venture, as co-founder of Lipstick and Muffin Media. Along with my business partner Tracey Nguyen, we aim to empower female entrepreneurs/small businesses and help them grow their online presence.
We work with a team of amazing entrepreneurs and bloggers to help business owners leverage the power of the internet and social media. Even though I love working for myself, over the past few months I’ve realized that I can’t do everything I want to on my own. Working with the team is one of my favourite parts of the business.
As a “girl boss” every day is different and that’s what I love most. Some days it’s just me and my lap top in a local coffee shop; sometimes me and Tracey will meet with new clients or plan out social media strategy for them; other days I’m learning from others on the team and meeting with mentors to figure out how I can grow in my business.
Whether you’re an online shop owner, blogger, content creator, or other girl boss professional, here are a few solid tips for how to be a girl boss. Take a look at the things that help get me through each day!
1. A BLOG
My blog has helped me grow my business in SO many ways. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without it. It has helped me land freelance clients, coach bloggers who are just starting out, and share my passions and expertise to those who need it most! Plus my blog itself has created a source of extra income (and who would say no to making an income doing what you love!).
If you’re wondering if you should start a blog, I say you should do it 100%! No one has your voice, your experiences or your stories and people need to hear them! If you feel like there are too many bloggers out there already, just remember that no one is YOU!

2. A VISION
You can’t get to where you want to be without a clear vision. Why? Because without a vision you don’t know what you’re trying to achieve. Do you want to be the go-to source for ethically made yoga apparel? Do you want to be the most unapologetic and diverse lipstick line the world has ever seen?
Sit down and craft a well thought out vision. This will give your business a clear focus and keep you from going off in all the wrong directions.
It’s very hard to see success without goals. From financial goals to growth goals, to customer service and networking goals, writing down goals can play a big part in the blooming of your girl boss biz.
Be realistic with your goals, but don’t be afraid to dream big. And write your goals down! Putting pen to paper forces you to focus on what you really want and what you think you can achieve. Share your goals with others, as well. This is a way to hold yourself accountable to reach them!
Some of the most successful entrepreneurs spend a significant amount of their day with their head buried in a book. From when I was young, I’ve always been told that reading will make me smarter and broaden my understanding of the world.
Find books that motivate you, teach you something, and make you want to do better. Alicia Tenise rounded up the best books for lady bloggers and entrepreneurs. If you’re looking to add to your book list, check it out!

5. A MENTOR
Learning from those who have been where you are and where you want to go is essential to growing as a girl boss. Entrepreneurship isn’t always an easy road and success doesn’t happen overnight.
Tracey has already taught me so much in the short time I’ve known her and although she’s my business partner I also consider her one of the most valuable mentors in my life! She has grown her online business to somewhere I can only hope to be in the next few years and I continually learn something from her week after week!
Find a mentor. Listen to their advice. Ask them for help when you need it and don’t be resistant to learning and growing in a new way.
6. A SUPPORT SYSTEM
I’ve heard horror stories about entrepreneurs not being supported by their family and friends. Bloggers whose husbands won’t even read their blog because they think it’s a waste of time, or parents to tell their entrepreneurial children they need to find a real job.
Luckily, I’m surrounded by people who are very supportive of me and my goals. Sure, there are some who are a little confused and wondering how and if I can make a living out of this. But they still believe in me, and that’s what counts. My friends and family are the most important people to me and I couldn’t imagine what it would be like if I didn’t have their support.
If you can’t find support from your family and friends, join Facebook groups, meet up with biz owners in your community, find an accountability partner. The best thing I’ve done for my business this year is join a team of like-minded entrepreneurs and bloggers. Find your tribe and keep them close!
7. A KILLER WEBSITE
If you’re wondering how to be a girl boss and create a girl boss empire, you need to have an UH-MAZING website. It needs to be clean, responsive, and beautiful, attracting your target client! Your website is your visual storefront and you have to make sure it says all the right things about you and your business.

8. A MORNING ROUTINE
Along with a consistent exercise routine, a proper morning routine is also key! Wake up at the same time each day, write down your goals and to-do list, eat breakfast, and make a cup of tea.
Everyone has certain things that work best for them in terms of getting them started for the day. Maybe you like to read for half an hour before getting down to business, perhaps you need your morning yoga class to get you up and at ’em, or you like to journal before starting anything else.
I suggest taking some me-time first thing in the morning. Checking your emails and getting straight to work can be extremely stressful. Even if you have a lot on your plate, take at least half an hour in the morning to get up, make breakfast and keep your mind off the day ahead.
