I’m jetting off for a quick trip to Arizona and I couldn’t be more excited. Leaving a snow storm for 30 degree temps and sunshine is A-OK with me. I love most aspects of traveling – planning, going to the airport, and of course exploring the destination, and I’m very lucky to have been able to travel to many places around the world. But I don’t really like flying. It makes me anxious, kind of grosses me out and I always feel dirty after stepping off a plane, which is why in-flight beauty essentials are key!
Sitting for hours on an airplane can really wreak havoc on your skin. I already feel parched thinking about the super dry air and lack of hydration. Depending on your skin type it either dries out your skin completely or leaves it feeling greasy – neither of which are ideal for otherwise exciting travels. The airplane restroom mirror has never been a good friend of mine. What the heck does the cabin air do to us up there anyways?
But, you live and you learn, and it got me thinking about some in-flight beauty tips and tricks that I’ve started implementing on my travels. They’ll keep your skin looking fresh upon arrival even if a shower is all you can think about. Basically: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! And then hydrate some more!
1) Eye cream
I’ve recently added eye cream into my daily makeup routine and I don’t think I’ll ever go back. The skin under your eyes is the only part of your face that doesn’t create its own moisture, so it’s important to apply an eye cream so it doesn’t dry out. This is especially crucial on a plane, where the dry cabin air sucks moisture from your skin. An eye cream will ensure your eyes are fresh and de-puffed when you land!
2) Face mist
Spritzing facial mist before you step off the plane ensures your skin is hydrated and dewy. I love Jurlique’s rosewater mist – it’s refreshing and smells absolutely amazing. It’s just the pick-me-up you need after a long, draining flight!
If you wear contacts, you know how dry they can get on a long flight. I usually fall asleep on the plane too, which only makes things worse. I’ve learned that flying in glasses is much more comfortable. Remember to bring your contact case with you on your carry-on so you can slip your contacts out and your glasses on. This way you can skip out on the red, tired eye look.
4) Lip balm
Just like the rest of your face, your lips can get pretty dry up in the air. A super hydrating lip balm is key to remedying this, and one of my faves is Blistex lip conditioner. It’s soo moisturizing and smells great too!
Once you’re past security, get a bottle of water (or five). Drinking water is one of the best things you can do for your skin while you’re up in the air. It keeps you hydrated and makes your skin glow.
6) Easy on the makeup
I wear little to no makeup when I fly, depending on the time of day. If it’s a morning flight, I don’t wear any, but if I’m coming straight to the airport from a day of work, I have the makeup on I wore that day. I find for flights, the less makeup you wear the better. It either dries out or ends up looking greasy. Bare skin allows you to moisturize and freshen up your skin throughout the flight, and you can apply a few layers of mascara and blush before you land to perk up your face!
7) Toothbrush & toothpaste
Your mouth can feel super dry and gross after a flight, so bringing a travel toothbrush and toothpaste along with you is always a good idea. You can either brush on the plane or freshen up in an airport restroom once you’ve landed. You’ll feel so much better once you do!
