Blogging is fun, liberating, and soul-cleansing, but there are bound to be days when you ask yourself if it’s all worth it. Sometimes it feels like nothing is going your way, and it’s easy to let negativity knock you down. Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt down about negative comments, low page views, or the self-deprecating trap of comparison? Same.
But guess what? Overcoming challenges and obstacles is only going to make you and your blog stronger. It’s not always going to be easy, and you’ll definitely be scared out of your mind sometimes, but DON’T give up.
Staying positive is really important when you’re a blogger – especially a new blogger. There are lots of things that can work against you, from unsupportive peers/family to your own doubtful thoughts. But implementing a few tips and tricks can help you stay on a positive track. Check out what works best for me below!
1. Remember your motivation
Think about what motivated you to become a blogger in the first place. Do you want a creative outlet? Do you want to make some money on the side? Do you want to turn your blog into your biz so you can be your own boss? Work from home? Make a difference? All of the above?
Write down your biggest motivations and go back to the list when you’re feeling down about your blog. Focusing on WHY you’re doing what you’re doing can help build you up and get you into a more positive mindset.
2. Set goals
Goals are fun! Set specific goals for yourself that you can tick off your to-do list. Whether it’s a financial goal, health goal, or goals for blog and biz, write them down and make them detailed.
As a blogger, for example, don’t just set a goal to comment on other blogs. What blogs? How many times a week will you devote to commenting and building your community? Making your goals specific makes them more achievable, and setting goals in the first place will make you excited and motivated to conquer them!
3. Don’t listen to everyone else
Not everyone will support or understand your decision to be a blogger. Especially if you want to turn it into your full-time biz, they may think it’s risky, or not see it as a “prosperous” career path, and those opinions can bring you down.
Focus on what encourages you, surround yourself with like-minded positive people, and don’t give up on your dream! You know your blog best – the ins and outs, the ups and downs, what’s working and what’s not. Don’t let others dictate your happiness or success.
4. Challenge negativity
Negativity comes in many forms. As a blogger, it could be brutal comments left on one of your posts. It could surface from comparing yourself to others who seem more successful, or even a super unproductive day. The thing is, it’s always easier to focus on the negatives. I don’t know why, but it is.
You know, like when you kill it at an interview, except for one little thing. And that little thing is the ONLY thing you can focus on afterwards. It’s so silly but it’s how the human mind works.
Make sure you focus on AT LEAST one positive thing a day, no matter how small. Write it down or at least take a few moments to think deeply about it. It’s so important. It’s not exactly natural to challenge your negative thoughts, but overtime it will make a big impact.
5. Find a supportive community
Whether it’s a Facebook group, a blog, or mastermind group, stick to communities that motivate you. I’m part of a few freelance writing and blogging groups on Facebook and the members encourage and inspire me every single day.
I also have a number of key blogs I visit that have awesome tips and information for new bloggers. My faves?
There is A LOT of info out there and it can be really overwhelming, so I find it’s best to stick to a few of your favourites. Visit them often and they will encourage you to stay positive and reach your blogging goals!
